Here at Outdoor Illuminations we provide all the most common landscape lighting fixtures, along with what we call "specialty fixtures. The most common fixtures we use are directional up lights, flood lights, path lights, and down lights. Specialty lights are fixtures that are used for areas that require a very specific type of application or in uncommon areas. To choose the right landscape light fixture, you first need to know what that fixtures purpose is. This blog reviews the basic applications for various common landscape lighting fixtures available today.
This is a simple guide suitable for beginners or someone with no knowledge of landscape lighting design who is thinking about purchasing a landscape lighting system from a professional company.
Common Landscape Lighting Fixtures
The best landscape lighting companies in the industry know that landscape lighting design is vital to creating a display for the customer that is both functional and eye-catching. Along with your design you must be using the right fixture for your landscape lighting display. Here are some of the more common landscape lighting fixtures:
Landscape Lighting- Directional Up Light or Spotlight
Directional up lights or "spotlights" are the most common landscape lighting fixture. This fixtures purpose is to direct light into a single direction facing up. You can choose various beam spreads for a spotlight depending on the application. Directional up lights are great for lighting up the walls on your home, trees, columns, and the second story of your home. When your choosing any landscape lighting fixture for your design, you want to make sure you choose the right color temperature. For darker colors, 2700K is usually more suitable. For lighter colors you may want to choose 3000K. Using this fixture, you can accent architecture and the landscape creating an artful display around your home.

Landscape Lighting- Flood Lights & Wash Lights
The next type of landscape lighting fixtures we will cover are
and wash lights. Flood lights and wash lights are very similar in which they produce a much wider area of light in the direction they are facing. A wash light is a bit more broader area with less intensity than a flood light. You may use a wash light facing a retaining wall or the side of your house in your landscape lighting design. Flood lights are usually more directional but still produce a wide beam spread of light for maybe an entrance sign or shrubbery around your home.
Landscape Lighting- Path Lights
Path lights are another common landscape lighting fixture that are great for lighting walkways, landscapes, flower beds and more! In your landscape lighting design it's great to have various types of fixtures, including path lights, not only to make your lighting system more functional but to make it pleasing to the eye. Make sure you don't place your path light in a high traffic area or in the grass where landscapers may knock it over.

Landscape Lighting- Down Lights
Down Lights are very similar to directional up lights in the way they look, but are manufactured a bit different. If you use a directional up light as a down light, it won't last very long. Down lights need to be "potted" making them withstand moisture while facing down. That is why its very important to use quality landscape lighting products like we do here at Outdoor Illuminations. Down lighting is great for moon lighting trees or bringing a large amount of light to a hangout spot like an outdoor fire pit in your backyard.
Landscape Lighting- Specialty Lights
Finally, the last type of lighting fixtures we will cover in this blog are specialty lights! When we talk about specialty lighting we are referring to a type of fixture that is used in areas that require something specifically made to light that area. Examples include deck lights, sconce lights, soffit lights or well lights. With various specialty lights your can highlight, accent and illuminate the upper stories of your home, garage doors, deck, porch, outdoor living space, etc. These forms of landscape lighting are usually more advanced and take more time and skill to install.
